In a human body, both men and women, there are female and male hormones, that is, estrogen and androgens. When young men are growing, the balance of these hormones fluctuates and there are times when the androgens decrease and the estrogen increases leading to the development of Gynecomastia, or enlarged breasts. The balance often restores quickly, and the Gynecomastia goes away.
However, in adults, the condition arises due to other factors that affect this hormonal balance in the body. Growth related imbalances are often not a very large concern, as the body slowly corrects the imbalance, resulting in a flat-chested young man. However, in adult males, the imbalance is often a result of another influence.
Reasons leading to Gynecomastia in Adults
- Use of Drugs – A hormone imbalance may be caused by the use of drugs. The use of recreational drugs is often the number one cause of the imbalance. Drugs like marijuana lead to Gynecomastia with longtime use. The doctor might prescribe other chemical types of drugs to heal an underlying disease; in this case, the individual should consult with their doctor to find drugs that won’t cause a hormone imbalance.
- Bodybuilders who use steroids are susceptible to Gynecomastia. Steroids that are bought off the shelf, or gotten in illicit fashions are often hazardous to hormonal balance. Without proper care, taking in steroids can lead to serious Gynecomastia. It is important to consult a physician before taking steroids. This way, the individual is able to stop the increase of estrogen in the body.
- Health Disorders – If a male has a sex organ disorder, for example in the testes, this can lead to less testosterone in the body. A decrease in testosterone, means an unusual high amount of estrogen flowing in the male body. Estrogen affects a male body by increasing the development of breasts leading to Gynecomastia. You can however make use of an estrogen blocker if estrogen is the cause of the breast growth.
- Kidney Failure, liver failure & cirrhosis are all conditions that lead to Gynecomastia. These conditions cause the body to have serious hormone fluctuations that can lead to Gynecomastia.
The key is to discover what is causing the Gynecomastia. A doctor is able to find out if the cause is a hormonal imbalance. In this case, with growing young men, and aging men, the hormonal imbalance cannot be prevented, or controlled if it is too severe. The imbalance often resolves itself after a while as the body adjusts to growth changes. However, Gynecomastia caused by drugs and diseases can be prevented through fore knowledge.
A doctor can help discover the cause of the imbalance, be it a type of medicine, or a type of disease, and find a solution to restore balance to the body and halt the development of Gynecomastia.
